General description of the collection: The Bertha Cunningham papers include correspondence between Bertha Cunningham and her sons (James J. Cunningham, Charles R. Cunningham, and Paul Cunningham) who were on active duty in the U.S. Army, the Army Air Force, and the Navy during the period covered. Prior to military service, James J. Cunningham served in the Civilian Conservation Corps. Included is a 1940 letter which was mailed from Company, 334, CCC Camp in Luray, Virginia. The bulk of the letters are to Bertha from the sons. A small number are from one son to another or from Bertha to a son. The letters comment mainly on packages received and sent, changes of address, family health, and other general subjects.

James R. Cunningham (1896-) was an aviator, airline executive, and aviation communications expert during the twentieth century. Cunningham learned to fly at the U.S. Army School of Aeronautics in 1917, then worked as a forest patrol pilot for the U.S. Department of Agriculture. In 1926, he became a pilot for Pacific Air Transport, which soon became part of United Airlines. Cunningham held several executive positions with United Airlines, serving as general superintendent of Pacific Air Transport...
